For those of you who are tired of the Samsung Epic 4G stock ROM or you hate the Samsung/Sprint bloatware, you probably want to upgrade your phone to the Syndicate ROM. This ROM is highly
recommended as you get rid all that bloatware and save a ton more battery life.
It’s a bit complicated so I urge you to follow directions carefully.
Here’s how to install the Syndicate ROM on your Epic 4G:
First, you will need to copy over the following Syndicate ROM file to the SD card of your Epic 4G (or check this thread at XDA Developer’s for the latest version).
Download Syndicate ROM
IMPORTANT: Make sure you update Clockwork Recovery ROM Manager app to the latest version first, you can do this simply by going to Market, search from ROM Manager and hit update. Then open up ROM Manager, and hit Flash Clockwork Recovery.
Now, if you are on a stock ROM (meaning you haven’t rooted), just make sure you’ve update your phone to the latest EC05 stock ROM. (See directions here)
If you are on an older after-market ROM, my suggestion is to back up everything, unroot your Epic 4G, then update your phone to the latest EC05. This is because the Syndicate ROM uses EXT4 filesystem, you will brick your phone if you try to do just install the zip file. You can use tools like Odin as described on XDA Developer’s Syndicate ROM page but it’s a big mess and headache, I don’t recommend that route.
Once you are on EC05 stock ROM, go root your phone again.
After that, it’s easy, you can go into the Clockwork recovery menu by turning your phone off then press on power WHILE HOLDING DOWN Volume Down and the Camera button.
Once in Clockwork recovery, you will see that Clockwork will backup your old filesystem RFS and convert everything from RFS to EXT4. This process will take 4-5 minutes.
What is RFS and EXT4?
RFS is a proprietary filesystem used by Samsung but it’s laggy and slow while EXT4 is preferred linux filesystem that will speed up your Epic 4G and also the filesystem that Syndicate ROM uses.
Once this is done, you can simple “wipe” to factory then install the zip file you copied into your SD card.
When that’s done, you can enjoy the super-fast Syndicate ROM.
